Extracurricular courses
Movement, creativity, and lots of fun: With our diverse and free range of courses, we enable children and young people to spend their free time in meaningful ways.

Why we offer free extracurricular courses

One in four children in Europe is at risk of poverty. Many families cannot afford paid extracurricular activities, leaving children and teenagers without access to non-formal educational opportunities — an essential part of developing knowledge and skills. Around 70 % of our learning takes place in informal contexts, such as within the family, through exchange with others, or during our free time.
This is exactly where Hobby Lobby steps in with its free and easily accessible extracurricular courses. Children and teenagers can discover their talents, develop strengths, and realise their potential.
The free Hobby Lobby courses are led by voluntary course instructors and are as diverse as the volunteers themselves: from basketball and kickboxing to creative pursuits like street art and acting, as well as foreign languages and science experiments.
Together, we create a fourth place of learning — one that gives purpose, opens new perspectives, and contributes to educational and social equality.
Impact areas
Social and communication skills
During the courses, participants learn to work well in teams, show empathy, and take responsibility. By communicating with peers, Youth Leaders, and course instructors, they expand their language skills and gain confidence in interacting with others.
Mental health and psychosocial well-being
Through active participation, children experience that their contributions matter and that they can make a difference. These experiences make them more satisfied, confident, and motivated. They build new friendships, feel part of a group, and develop a stronger sense of well-being and belonging.
Leadership and networking
In our courses, participants learn how to inspire others, deal with mistakes, find creative solutions, and stay open to new experiences. By collaborating with peers, they form friendships that go beyond school. They experience the instructors and Youth Leaders as real-life role models who demonstrate responsibility, respect, and how to overcome challenges.
